Literature Text
we are climbing creaking stairs
clambering in covered dark,
tempting vespers of sea air
salt on our tongues.
when we reach the top we meet
seeping dark immensity,
giants turning in their sleep
like worlds begun.
pulsing, proud, powerful sea
plays against old wooden planks,
posing with infinity
this lighthouse stands.
waves that dash against the shore
shattering like shards of glass,
slice us down to nothing more
than grains of sand.
smoothing subtle boundaries
blending into lighthouse glow,
pale against infinity
we disappear.
underneath a docile moon
we absorb the emptiness,
rise like helium balloons
above the pier.
lifted for a bated breath
out across the universe,
in the peaceful black calm death
glistens like a demon tooth.
in this moment we're grains cast
into time's continuum,
high above our paltry past
closer to the truth.

Highway Dreaming
They're living on cheap ramen and hopeless dreams. He wants to be a world-famous brain surgeon and she wants to be more things than she can count on one hand. Sometimes they fight about her leaving her lipstick in the sink or when he doesn't pick up orange juice at the grocery store. But they're happy, even with the cracked paint and terrible plumbing. Every morning at 7:08 he catches the 7:15 train to the university and she takes their battered old Sedan to her job at the highway tolls. She likes to make up stories about the more interesting cars to tell him later. The bedside lamp is on, her voice humming low in her throat, and he drifts qu

ugly consumption
monday my little girl asked, "what would happen if someone ate
the sun and
how many calories does it have?"
and i wish i could see myself objectively, wish
my skin wasn't worn from
fitful starvation.
have you ever seen your
hands as i do, strange bloated things
in search of bones?
and i wish i could remember when beauty
was a mouth red as pomegranate seeds eyes
like sickle moons. back when it was
more than numbers. ninety-five, eighty-eight.
get down to eighty-five and you will be
beautiful. be
thin and sexless as wet march.
tuesday pa told me: "acceptance ain't something you
can buy at a convenience store."
and i am all ma
